Es tut mir Coke Light

Coke Leid

Warning: Fizzy Drink Rant approaching.

I have some trouble ordering Coca-cola. You see, it’s just so gosh darned confusing. Not only is there regular Coke, Cherry Coke and Vanilla Coke, but also Coke Light and Coke Zero. (Sidenote: What’s the difference between the last two anyway?) On top of this, where I’m from, Coke Light is called Diet Coke. So in restaurants, the dialogue often proceeds something like this (in German, but I’ll translate for the Englischers):

Me: “I’ll have a Diet Coke please.”

Restaurateur/waitress/fellow diners: *quizzical looks*

Me: “OH! I mean Coke Light.”

R/W: “I’m sorry, we only have Coke Zero.”

Me: *looking confused and frustrated because there IS NO DIFFERENCE* “Yes, that’ll be fine.”

So I propose a new phrase which is to be used in such a situation: “Es tut mir Coke leid.” This can be used in any situation in which there is a Coke-related mix-up. You accidentally ask for Diet Coke, you say: “Es tut mir Coke leid.” There is only normal Coke, the waiter says: “Es tut mir Coke leid.”

Maybe it’ll catch on. Maaaaaybe I will be the only one who says it and Germans will continue to look at me strangely.

  1. IN Oz, Diet Coke is sweetened with aspartame (NutraSweet) and is sweeter for a female palate. Coke Zero is sweetened with a fructiose deriviative which J&J markets under the brand name Splenda.

In Deutschland,(I believe) Coke Light is sweetened with saccharine and Coke Zero with aspartame, since Splenda isn’t licensed or available or something.

Diet Coke/Coke lIght is marketed to women. Coke Zero is marketed to teen boys and young men, who crave the caffeine and would mainline it 24/7, but if they did that the poor lads would be buzzing from all the sugar.

When I lived in Japan, they sold caffeinated bottled water. Cokes Light and Zero perform a similar function.

  2. @headbang: So much information, so little time. I’ve since switched to Zero. Echte Geschmack. Zero Zucker.

I <3 the Japanese. They think of everything.

  3. Diet/light/zero are all the same!! And they will always be way uglier than my precious normal coke, no matter wish “sugar substitute” they use (Edulcorante in my language and by the way is strange that there is not a word for it in English, well that’s why they say that Spanish is one of the richest languages…specially for cursing and rare funny words XD) Anyway …Last week I went to some public place and there were some guys and girls dressed up as some giant Zero cokes XD … pretty funny and humiliating (what some folks do for money) … anyway … this … strange dressed people told us (I was with my family) that, that zero thing was in the market to emulate the flavor of normal coke buy still being diet (poor bastards I wanted to tell him, but the guy was only doing his job XD)…So that can explain us the real reason why the Zero thing exists …marketing!!!!!! IT IS ALWAYS MARKETING!!!

Miss…you make me wish to know the German language … and by the way…You are from New Zealand right??  Keep writing and making videos! And I’ll keep watching…
