The death of the umlaut? (video)

Jööööö, my musing on the plight of the umlaut. Including proposing a campaign to make umlauted letters part of the alphabet proper! The group can be called LOLCAKAOPULIA (League of the Linguistically Concerned, Also Known As the Organisation for the Promotion of the Advancement of the Umlauted Letters In the Alphabet). I think it’s kind of catchy, don’t you?

    Schechte Idee! Look at the confusion brought about the last time they reformed spelling in this country. I think they should just simplify it even further and adopt English. Advertisers already have, so why not?

  2. @Nööö: reformed spelling is a different issue. Whehter this is a success of LOLCAKAOPULIA or in fact historically a success preceeding the foundation of LOLCAKAOPULIA, a website like http://www.miss-verständnis.de is possible! In other words, the Umläüte have already started their way of international success.

    @M-Vändnis: do they actually pay you for what you do?

  3. @Ian: Ah, ye olde ‘Denglish Debate’. i.e. How much English can German incorporate before it isn’t really German any more? Advertising-German is certainly a different breed.

    @Helmut: Not really!

  7. [...] Of course such a vote never occurred, but the German heritage of America remains enshrined in the placenames, like Hamburg. Maybe there should be a Transatlantic Hamburg Alliance (For the Advancement of Inter-Hamburger Relations)? THAFAIHR. Almost as catchy as LOLCAKAOPULIA. [...]

  9. Es ist doch eigetlich egal in welcher sprache man spricht . Man kann sie doch mischen um sich einader anzunähern . So what , just mix german and english and everybody understands a few parts of a sentence. Also machen wir es doch einfach . Dann mal , Alles Gute and have a nice life . Nur die Grammatik wird wohl nie zueinander passen .

    whatcha think regarding introducing umlaute to English? some words could use a fresh up really! like action… clearly, äction would add a different dimension to things…

  13. I have to protest! Hüsker Dü a heavy metal band?! Nooo way. :)

    Oh, Hüsker Dü is actually a Danish phrase, but ok, it’s normally spelled without the dots.

    Reminds me of Snakkerdu Densk - a by now veteran Austrian indie band — http://familienalbum.sil.at/esnakker.htm
