Schon vorgeglüht?
Today, discussion of another cool and oh-so-appropriate German word: Vorglühen. Now, you Germans will surely know what I’m getting at (and it’s not the literal translation), but Englischers might be a little confused. The literal translation of ‘vorglühen’ is ‘to preheat’. But this is not what I am talking about. Oh no.
When you go and drink a couple of beers at a friend’s house before a big party, that’s a Vorglühen. When you imbibe a gin and tonic or two before the society ball, yep, that’s a Vorglühen. And if you drink some pre-mixed vodka cranberries before hitting the club… you better believe that’s a Vorglühen.
My American colleague described it as “the pre-game”, but in British/Australian/NZ English, I’m not sure there’s such a cool translation. I mean, sure, you can have some “pre-drinks” before you go out. But it’s got nothing on Vorglühen. Any suggestions for a translation from the English speakers out there?

I’m glad an English native who’s familiar with the German/Austrian (vorglühen – it’s Austrian German, too) language gets to pick up a hard-to-translate-word.

WELL, I give up. I know the term pre-game, but I am not sure if Brits and their derivatives have a word for something that is as cool as Vorglühen…

to be wasted
to be fucked/screwed
to booze (für saufen)
to be shit-faced (i learned that one frm a kiwi)

Ansonsten gefallen mit die amerikanische umganssprachlichen Begriffe da.

What about “warming up” before a party? It’s not a standard expression, but used in context I would know what one meant. I have also heard starting the party before the party described as getting “lubricated” = easing the difficulty of social interaction.
I have never in my life heard the term “vorglühen” – such practice is not part of my social environment. We have always been fans of “after parties” though.
hey, i agree with ann, the warm-up term seems reasonable, but i guess miss v’s intention was to show that there wasn’t such a thing as a literal translation and even finding an appropriate term was difficult.
In the same vein as ‘warm-up’ I would add the phrase “to do some stretches” .
Seeing that ‘Vorgluehen’ brings to mind starting a fire (which will be the party) how about something like “Igniting”, “Flinting it” or “Petrolising”?
