Polyglotastic!

I’ve just had word that the biggest (or only?) Polyglot Scrabble Tournament in the world is taking place this year in Spain. This is apparently the first event of its kind, where the world’s most cunning linguists can meet and defeat, playing Scrabble in many different languages. And they are promoting it so zealously that even Joe Nobodys like me have been invited. Unfortunately, I (typically) missed the cut-off date, and, besides, I only speak two languages… and some incrediblly lacklustre French and Spanish. And to think, I could have WON something!

Would any of you enter a Polyglot Scrabble competition? Do you consider yourself a Polyglot?

  1. Hm… I’m fluent in English and, of course, German, and I speak enough Japanese to live over there and have friendly relationships with my neighbors.

The next point would be my “passive” control of Dutch – which means I can understand WRITTEN Dutch, but I can neither understand spoken phrases nor can I actively take part in any form of discourse in Dutch.

… and when it comes to French, well, I can ask for directions and buy goods in a supermarket without being completely lost.
