Camping Intense

Instead of Miss V, you can now call me Miss Tipi, as I’ve just spent the last part of the summer camping.  That’s right, like sleeping bags, putting up tents in the rain, bring-your-own toilet tissue, wake-up-with-the-birds camping.  According to the Wik: “The participants, known as campers, get away from urban areas, their home region or civilization in general and enjoy nature while spending one or more nights, usually at a campsite.”  Keywords in that sentence:  Away. From. Civilization.  On the first day,  as we erected our 20 Euro tent as we were pelted by the younger brother of Hurricane Gustav and hoped our equally inexpensive air mattress wouldn’t deflate, I couldn’t help but wonder why people would do this as a leisure activity.  However, by the end, I was whipping up risotto on the camp fire and rigging up make-shift washing lines with the best of them.  I could get used to this whole nature lark.
Now I am back using some community software, basically being hooked up on Facebook again. Have I become a Facebook addict? Oh no, good bye real world, bye bye nature.

  1. What area did you go to?

I did two years of national service despite the fact that I hate camping, in humid tents with smelly sleeping bags. But, actually, after a nice walk in the park, it’s okay.

Just replace “the park” by “the Black Forest in mid-winter”, and “a nice walk” by “35 km with 30 kg of luggage between roll call at 0600 and dismissal at 0300 for a week”.
The humid tent and the smelly bag become synonymous with “heaven on earth”.

  3. Lekker, if I’m not mistaken, means tasty or delicious. But if you say that a person is “hot” then you say that her/him is a “lekker ding” in Dutch…

  4. What happened?
Did you get used to “this whole nature lark” so well that you have now said goodbye to the civilized world?
No word from you for almost three months is unusual.

  5. I plan to move to nz; therefor I thought I would do some research through –YouTube. I came across your video on the kiwi accent and still watch and laugh with you. I lived in Germany for ten years myself, I liked it there but I sure New Zealand will have my heart.

  6. I have also been “camping” a few times in the last three month (to be honest, I had a piece of high-tech-equipment with me: an assault rifle) but even I was able to keep my blog somewhat up-to-date.
